“Latte Stone-5”

Acrylic on Canvas & Mixed Media

The latte stone is a significant icon for Guam and the Chamorro people. A latte is a symbol of Chamorro strength which translated in Chamorro means “stone.” Ancient Chamorros used latte as support for wood structures with thatched roofs. My Latte Stone series is a continuation of themes of Chamorro culture, such as fish, turtles, and carabao. I blended the moods of my imagination with aspects of the culture that I have been assimilated into. As the latte stone has two parts, the ground stone is called the “haligi” and the cap stone is called the “tasa.” My culture is a blend as I am from another culture but made Guam my home. Guam not only is land but blended together with the ocean as the two complete each other.

It was just totally overwhelming to explore my feelings freely and express them fully with this painting. I wanted to express a fiery and refreshing environment with this abstract painting. This painting encourages the audience to see coral’s survival and growth in the sea by moonlight. Even at night, one can still see the brightness of the tropical marine environment and the beauty of the marine expression.
