Hunter Orland

Hunter Orland is a sculptor and ceramicist from the island of Guam.  She recently graduated from the University of Guam with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Fine Arts.  The interweaving of different disciplines: ceramics, fashion, and baking as well as her performing arts background in dance and music are what influences her art.  Techniques from other art forms are frequently incorporated in her creation process and often help her think of ideas.  Hunter has exhibited her work in the Guam Art Exhibit (GAX) 2018 and 2019, Imbentibu Famalao’an I in 2021, and the 4th Annual Research Conference (ARC) Visual Arts Exhibition.

One of my favorite things to do at the beach is to lay in the sandy seabed of the ocean, looking up at the water’s surface.  This work is inspired by that moment of heavy stillness, swirling with colors of the sun hitting the water.  Comfortably nestled onto a deserted part of the sea regrettably surrounded by the dead marine life.  It’s beauty above contrasts the barren life below, slowly losing its color.  Bittersweet, how a lovely moment appreciating nature is thanks to the death of other living beings.
