Sea Cabbage: Seeping Earth and Water

Ceramic

I owe it to the land and ocean for allowing me to enjoy the vegetation that fuels and continues to inspire me.  I incorporated the playful form of a cabbage because of the local produce I eat every day.  I was inspired by the layers and patterns found on its form.  Equally, I was inspired by the movement of ocean currents.  Blue stain, represents water. Brown Tenmoku glaze, represents earth.  These two elements seep through the crevices of the cabbage-like vessel. It represents the way in which nature flows through the food I eat, and in turn, my body.

When carving this vessel, I became lost in an almost meditative state and would fall into the details of each pathway.  It was my hyper fixation, a piece I always came back to.  Similar to the process of carving this vessel, I always come back to nature. Nature is my constant inspiration and a source of happiness because when living on island I am forever intertwined with it.  I cannot escape it.
