FINE ARTS AT UOG THROUGH THE DECADES

1950's

1960's

The first Fine Arts faculty member, Pauline Harvey (right), taught sumi-e, ink wash painting, and ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arrangement at the Territorial College of Guam in 1954, in a Quonset hut at the college’s first location in Mongmong.  Her husband, Morris Harvey, was one of the ten original faculty members from Ohio State to teach at the College of Guam.  Pauline Harvey retired in 1978 and became one of the first faculty to be awarded the title Professor Emerita.

During the 1960s, the College of Guam relocated to Mangilao and the College expanded to a four-year degree granting institution as the University of Guam.  The Fine Arts Building was completed by the end of the decade.

1970's

The Fine Arts program included a three-prong approach to include courses in visual arts, drama, and music as part of the curriculum. As stated in the 1974-75 UOG Undergraduate catalog: The purpose of each of these areas is to further the professional training of students from Guam, the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, the continental United States, and other parts of the world. Students are encouraged to develop proficiency in the various media while preserving the integrity of the characteristic forms of their own cultures.

1980's

The primary purpose of the Department of Fine Arts is to provide its students with well-rounded preparation for professional or teaching careers in one of the many branches of Art, Drama, or Music.  In addition, it seeks to provide opportunities for students in all departments of the University to participate in artistic activities and develop an awareness of cultural values. The exhibition program at the Isla Center for the Arts began in 1984 under the leadership of Dr. Marvin Montvel-Cohen.
